Welcome to Downingtown Troop 23!

BSA Troop 23 has been helping youth in Downingtown and Coatesville walk their "Trail to Eagle" since 1965. Over that time, the world and advancement requirements have changed, but Troop 23 has maintained it's goal to instill and instruct ways to "Be Prepared" for all that life may bring.

Troop 23B is an active, medium-large troop for boys, participating in monthly camping trips, regular service projects and yearly Summer Camp and High Adventure experiences. In 2019, Scouts BSA allows for the creation of girl specific Troops. Central Presbyterian Church agreed to add another charter for a girl specific Troop 23G

If you are interested in becoming involved in Scouting and part of Troop 23, please e-mail us or better yet join us at Central Presbyterian Church (100 W Uwchlan Ave, at the intersection of Rt 113 and Pennsylvania Ave), in Downingtown, PA for our weekly Troop meeting, Thursday nights from 7:30 - 8:30pm.

Troop 23 at Cape May US Coast Guard Training Center
For the first time Troop 23B met at the church at 3 for a 3:15 departure, to head to the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May New Jersey. After a 2.5-hour drive, we arrived at camp.   Isn’t that crazy early time for us to arrive at camp?

The troop all set up their tents and then we went to the playground and the baseball field to have fun and mess around. We watched the Coast Guard Cadets train while we had a good time.  When it got dark, we all slowly went to bed listening to the crickets’ chirping and waves crashing on the beach.
We woke up around 6:15 to put on our class A’s and went to breakfast at 6:30. The food in the galley was good.   We went back to camp, put on our Class Bs and got ready for a self-guided tour of the base from Ben Plichta. We heard some amazing history that Ben read for us and went to the base store. The CGX (as it is called) had anything you would want, basically a mini-Walmart.  After shopping, we went to the cutters for a tour. The Coast Guard Cutters are their patrol ships.  The troops split into two groups, and we toured both cutters that were both in port. The cutters belonged to the FRC class of ships.  After the tours we went straight to lunch.

After lunch, the troop split into different groups, some went to the fire department for a small tour, or went swimming, or went to the base store.  For those that chose the tour or the store, they met up at the galley.  The troop was playing pool football with a volleyball. Some of the scouts were having fun on the diving board. We had an early dinner at around 4:30. After dinner, the troops split up again. Most of the troop went to the beach and went swimming while others stayed back and hung out. Once everyone returned, we all went to the playground and the baseball field. We had a good game of baseball on Saturday night and played until it got too dark to play. Then we chillaxed, some watched a movie, some went to bed listening to the waves crash on the beach with the stars out and crickets chirping on a cooler night.

On Sunday, we were up by 6:15 and went to breakfast at 6:30. Once breakfast was over, we packed up our gear and left to go back to the church.

Posted by bblankmeyer on Jun 12 2025 - 7:28pm

Dear Summer Camp parents:

In case they have forgotten anything or need a mid-week pickup, we will send a car load of care packages down to camp on Wednesday, June 25th. Homemade cookies or brownies, a note from home, small toys or games, powdered drink mix tubes and any little treats that might make your son's day are good choices.
